This carving is of a standing bear, and is located in front of 212 N. Main. The bear is standing behind a tree trunk and is hugging it with both arms.
Broken Bow, situated in the foothills of the Ouachita Mountains, got its beginning from the timber industry. Dierks Lumber Company named the town Broken Bow after the town in Nebraska where they began.
Almost every corner in the downtown area on Main Street and Broadway has a wood carving displayed. We counted 15 during our visit, but there are other raised brick gardens which we assume will hold additional carvings in the future. The gardens are surrounded by brick walls about 15 inches high. They are shaped differently depending on their location, and sit in the road itself, alongside the first parking space. They contain plantings and a carving. We were unable to determine the name of the carver. On one of the carvings, however, we saw the initials "SRS (heart) SKS" .
