The Montefiore fountains are public fountains in Liège. They bear the name of their donor, Hortense Montefiore-Bischoffsheim, wife of Georges Montefiore-Levi, industrialist and politician from Liège. She donated ten fountains to the city in 18881, and ten more three years later.
The initiative comes from the Society for the Protection of Animals, which celebrated, in 1888, its 25th anniversary. In addition to the water jets for passers-by, the fountains offer two pools for the use of animals: an upper pool for horses and a lower pool for dogs and birds. This justifies the name of "fountain-watering".
