This pillar can be found 81 metres above sea level on the edge of the rocky red sandstone cliffs that line the coastline between Arbroath and Lunan Bay. It is situated close to the headland of Red Head in the farming community of Ethie around a mile north-east of the fishing village of Auchmithie. The pillar is in good condition and commands wide ranging views both seaward and inland in an exposed location on the edge of a field. A wall hard up against its eastern side seperates it from a long drop to the shore below.

STEEPNESS: None to speak of unless coming from the unlikely direction of the seashore below.

TERRAIN: A track leads to the cliffedge a few yards south of the pillar and it is a mixture of long grass and soil along the edge of the wall from here.

ACCESSIBILITY: A mile or so from the end of the public road at Ethie Barns, although it is possible to drive along the potholed track north-eastwards to the edge of the cliffs. Keep to the wallside away from any crops when approaching the pillar.

NAVIGATION: The pillar is visible before the end of the track up against the wall. In mist, from the track end, keep to the landward (west) side of the wall where the pillar is situated.

DANGER: As stated, keep on the landward side of the wall due to the drop on the other side.
