In 1833, the government began construction of a lock and canal at the narrows between Sturgeon and Pigeon Lakes. The original lock at Bobcaygeon was the first lock to be built on the Trent-Severn Waterway. Soon a community began to develop around the lock and two local mills. Bobcaygeon was incoporated as a Village in 1876.
