The oldest and most prestigious monument of Hazebrouck raises its silhouette since the sixteenth century away from the city. The religious building dates from 1432 and is dedicated to Saint-Eloi.
Its construction, typical of the churches of Flanders, aligns three vessels with a tower in front. Its arrow, destroyed by a shelling during the last war, was rebuilt in 1994 thanks to the public authorities and with the help of an association created for this purpose: the APREC.
Two chapels in brick and stone, made in a flamboyant Gothic style and dedicated to Saint George, patron of crossbowmen (today Saint Sebastian, patron of archers) and St. Anne, patroness of the House of rhetoric. They recall the important role of local fraternities in the 16th century.
Five wooden altarpieces adorn the church, including the choir dedicated to Saint-Éloi, his patron. On the side walls, between the bays, was placed the Way of the Cross, work of the regional painter Lucien Jonas (1880-1947) and official command of the municipality led by Father Lemire.
It will be the only church in Antwerp until 1897, the date of construction of the Church of Our Lady in the district of the New World.
