The former Burra post office on the Barrier Hwy (Market St) is now the local art gallery and was constructed in 1860 as a telegraph office but included the post office from 1861 and included living quarters for the postmaster and his family
It was from here that John McDouall Stuart sent a telegram informing the Governor that he and his party had achieved the journey to the Gulf of Carpentaria and return
