This historical marker erected by the National Park Service at the parking area at Fort Laramie gives a general overview of the Fort's importance from the 1830s to 1890, when it was closed by the US Government.
The marker reads as follows:
"CROSSROADS OF A NATION MOVING WEST
Fort Laramie was perhaps the single most important location in America’s expansion into the West. Founded in 1834 is a trading post, it became a military fort in 1849. Until it closed in 1890, Fort Laramie influenced major events of history in the Trans-Mississippi West. The air of the first trade, Oregon Trail in the Indian wars, the fort served as an American foothold in a rapidly changing West. We invite you to explore Fort Laramie.
We recommend you begin at the Visitor Center."
