Battle of Moorefield
After a failed raid on New Creek on August 4, 1864, the Confederate cavalry of Gens. McCausland and Johnson made camp near Moorefield on the South Branch of the Potomac. Hoping to smash the Rebel raiders, Union Gen. Averell led his smaller force in a surprise attack early on the morning of the 7th and won a decisive victory, effectively crippling McCausland's force.
