The Brunswick Lion is the oldest preserved large sculpture of the Middle Ages north of the Alps and the first larger figurative hollow cast since antiquity. The bronze casting, created by an unknown artist 1166 in Braunschweig itself, weighs 880 kg, has a height of 1.78 m, a length of 2.79 m and a maximum wall thickness of 12 mm. Distributed over the world, but mainly in Germany, several copies of the Braunschweig Lion can be found. For example, in front of the Ratzeburg Cathedral (erected in 1881).
