Parkgate stands alongside the Dee estuary which has long had a record of silting.
The town only developed from 1686 because of silting of the River Dee and the estuary to the south of here. A new port was developed here with sailings to Liverpool.
However further silting in this area caused the port to be closed and shipping transferred to Liverpool.
The resulting saltmarsh is now an important bird life reserve after the area was purchased by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) in 1979 and the board has information about what can be seen here.
