Joseph Brown Junior was a local Keswick painter and decorator with a talent for oil painting. This painting depicts a number of local characters of 1870 Keswick. Helpfully the painting has a key identifying each of the 43 men, 1 woman and 1 girl in the painting and their occupations. For example the bearded gentleman in the centre foreground is the Skiddaw Hermit, who lived in a hut beneath Skiddaw. The characters in the painting have been researched by retired teacher Ros Roberts

The painting can be seen in Keswick Museum.
