This ghost sign, sufficiently faded as to make it a centenarian, can be seen on the south side of the brick building occupied by the "
Edge of the World Board Shop". The building, obviously old as it rests on a rubblestone foundation, is on Second Avenue, just north of Fourth Street. The sign is easily seen from Fourth Street.
On August 1, 1908 Fernie suffered a
devastating fire which burned the entire town, save for the present town hall, the Western Canada Wholesale warehouse and the Catholic priest’s residence (all concrete structures which managed to withstand the blaze). The Crowsnest Trading Company began to rebuild on their original site three days later. We assume that this is that selfsame site, leading us to believe that the sign was painted later in 1908 or in 1909.
