EN: The Haus zum Paradies is a Neo-Classical residential building in the Aeschenvorstadt of Basel. It is one of the last two old buildings preserved in this street. All others were replaced by then modern office and commercial buildings in the late 1950s.

The house was built from 1839-1841 by the architect Johann Jakob Stehlin the Younger for National Councilor Johann Rudolf Geigy-Merian as a city residence. Parts of the previous building were also used; during the 2007-2009 restoration, paintings from the 17th century came to light.

The main building has three floors with five window rows, the large central gate leads through a passageway to a courtyard. In addition to the representative front building, there is a simpler side wing, which used to house the stables, coach shelters and staff quarters.

The house is still inhabited today by descendants of the original builders.

DE: Das Haus zum Paradies ist ein klassizistischen Wohnhaus in der Aeschenvorstadt von Basel. Es ist eines der beiden letzte alten Gebäude, die in dieser Strasse erhalten sind. Alle anderen wurden Ende der 1950er Jahre durch damals moderne Büro- und Geschäftshäuser erstzt.

Das Haus wurde von 1839-1841 von dem Architekten Johann Jakob Stehlin den Jüngeren für Nationalrat Johann Rudolf Geigy-Merian als Stadtwohnsitz erbaut. Dabei wurden auch Teile eises Vorgängerbaus verwendet; bei der Restauration 2007-2009 kamen auch Malereien aus dem 17. Jahrhundert zum Vorschein.

Das Hauptgebäude hat drei Stockwerke mit fünf Fensterachsen, das grosse Tor in der Mitte führt durch eine Durchfahrt in einen Innenhof Neben dem repräsentativen Vorderhaus befindet sich an diesem Hof noch ein einfacherer Seitenflügel, der früher die Ställe, Kutschenunterstände und Zimmer der Angestellten enthielt.

Das Haus wird auch heute noch von Nachkommen des ursprünglichen Bauherren bewohnt.
