There was a private line made in the 1870's, to move coal from one side of the mountain, to where it would be used in the iron smelter at Mittagong.

There is a sign at the southern entrance to the tunnel, which reads:

"This tunnel is at the head of the 1874 incline that brought coal from the Nattai Gorge to fuel the local Iron Works." [With a photo, very similar as you will see it 'today'.]

For the 150 year celebration of railway to Mittagong, in 2017, the Berrima Historical Society wrote an article in their April Newsletter, where it is mentioned about the 1890's depression that the more recent owners of the coal mining operations, the Box Vale Colliery Company was forced to close the mine. And that it wasn't until 1996 that it became incorporated in a walking track. (visit link)
