The statue portrays a group of immigrants traveling with Albertus C. Van Raalte from Rotterdam to the United States in 1847 and settling in West Michigan in 1848. The statue created by Dutch sculptor Bert Kievit is a gift from the people of the province of Drenthe in the Netherlands. It commemorates Holland's Sesquicentennial.
