"a flat marble slab with incised effigies of John Vernam (d. 1480) and Rose his wife (d. 1479) with Latin inscription round the verge.

The inscription reads: 'Hic jacent Johannes Vernam et Rosa uxor ejus parentes M[agist]ri Joh[an]is Vernam Canonici Ecclesie Cath. Sar. et Here. qui quid' Johannes obiit xx die Januarii An[n]o D[omi]ni Mille° cccc° Octogesimo. Et Rosa memorata obiit decimo septimo die mensis Decembris Anno Domini M.CCCC. septuagesimo nono quoru animabus propicietur Deus Amen.' (This translates as -
'Here lie John Vernam and Rosa his wife, parents of John Vernam, Canon of Salisbury and Hereford Cathedrals. The said John died 20 January 1480. And the aforementioned Rosa died 17 December 1479 may God bless their souls. Amen'
) In Wright's time (1684) the slab was in the chancel; it measures 7 ft. 3 in. by 3 ft. 7 in."
