This elementary school was designed by the renowned school architect William B. Ittner using a u-shaped floor plan with one-sided corridors providing better lighting in the hallways and classrooms. This design is viewed as a transitional design for Ittner after studying school design in Europe. The building was built in 1901 with a Late 19th And 20th Century Revivals design. The school was named after St. Louis born children's poet Eugene Field; he is the author of children rhymes "The Duel," "Little Boy Blue," and "Wynken, Blynken, and Nod,".
The building has been removed from the inventory of St. Louis Public Schools and is being converted to 36 apartments. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.
