Wizard Island is a distinctive volcanic feature rising over 760 feet from the lake surface. Former several centuries after the eruption and collapse of Mount Mazama, the island is a miniature volcano called a cinder cone. About 7500 years old, it grew inside the caldera after Mount Mazama collapsed and while the caldera was filling with water.

Wizard Island formed explosively on top of older lava flows that extend to the bottom of the lake. This cinder cone is evidence that Mount Mazama continued to be active even after its greatest eruption, and may be active in the future. Wizard Island is just one of the 20 cinder cones in the park.
