A sign here adds more information;
Indian Village
The Alabama and Coushatta Indians
Settled here in the early 1780s.
Through the efforts of General Sam
Houston, Texas gave them 1210 acres
in 1854. The Federal Government
purchased 3071 acres in 1928.
There are several glaring
MISTAKES to the 1936 marker:
The name of the tribe is COUSHATTA, not Coushatti as found on the marker.
They settled here in the LATE 18th century, 1780s.
