L’Abbatiale Saint-Riquier
"La façade de l'église abbatiale où la verticalité domine, s'organise en trois parties : des contreforts contre-buttent les murs extérieurs des collatéraux ainsi que les angles de la tour.
Les deux tourelles d'escalier montent le long de ces derniers en mordant quelque peu sur les deux ailes. Le décor sculpté, dans un style flamboyant et exubérant, semble envahir la partie centrale, dépourvue de fenêtres, selon des procédés que l'on retrouve à Saint-Vulfran d'Abbeville et à la chapelle de Rue.
La densité des statues fait de la façade de Saint-Riquier un véritable théâtre à l'usage des fidèles où la volonté didactique de donner à voir et à comprendre s'efface parfois derrière la logique de la composition.
Ces sculptures de la façade ont été réalisées essentiellement sous Thibault de Bayencourt entre 1511 et 1536 lorsque l'ancienne façade fut remplacée par celle-ci.
La voussure du portail nord est ornée de six groupes difficiles à identifier avec précision en raison de l'état dégradé de la pierre, mais l'on remarque, sur le piédroit côté sud une statue , sans doute refaite à une date inconnue, d'un saint Gilles reconnaissable à sa robe d'ermite et à la biche qu'il caresse.
Il semble également que la statue aujourd'hui disparue qui ornait l'accolade représentait saint Eustache, dédiant ainsi cette partie de la façade à la chasse qui constitue encore aujourd'hui une activité importante du lieu.
Le portail central était à l'origine divisé par un trumeau que l'abbé d'Aligre fit supprimer. Chacun des piédroits, supportant les deux voussures à double ressauts, est orné d'une statue monumentale difficile à identifier. Dans les voussures, en douze groupes, est racontée la légende de saint Riquier.
En juin 1989, à la suite de fouilles effectuées sur le parvis de l'abbatiale, des ossements humains furent mis au jour. Ils furent identifiés comme étant ceux de Nithard, petit-fils de Charlemagne, abbé laïc de Saint-Riquier au IXe siècle.
Après des études scientifiques au laboratoire Pierre Süe du C.E.A. et du CNRS de Saclay, les restes de Nithard furent stockés dans les greniers de l'abbaye.
Redécouverts en 2011, ils ont été confiés au Centre archéologique départemental de Ribemont-sur-Ancre puis restitués à la commune de Saint-Riquier et exposés dans l'abbatiale le 9 mars 2012. "
