Allen T. Caperton

Born November 21, 1810, in Monroe County, he served in both houses of the Virginia legislature before the Civil War. Although he opposed secession, he voted for it in 1861 at the Richmond Convention. From 1863 to 1865, Caperton served in the Confederate Senate. In 1875, he succeeded Arthur I. Boreman as one of West Virginia's U.S. senators., dying in office on July 26, 1876.
