Schiller (1759-1805) was a dramatist, historian, and philosopher who was also a "Poet of the People." His plays Wilhelm Tell, Mary Stuart, Don Carlos, and Wallenstein aroused passion in his fellow Germans. According to Gayle and Cohen publication, this sculpture was the first one to be set out among the landscaped hillsides of Central Park. The work was a gift of German Americans. Schiller was devoted to human rights which prompted the French to make him a citizen of their new republic in 1792.
