"It is, after Ko Phi Phi Don, the largest island in the archipelago. The island is totally uninhabited but world famous. The paradise bay of Maya has served as a backdrop for many scenes from the film The Beach with Leonardo DiCaprio.
The island is famous for its lagoon lined with huge limestone cliffs but also for the "gypsies of the sea" (the Moken) who climb the cliffs to reach caves located tens of meters high to pick up the nests swallow for Chinese cuisine.
Thousands of tourists are flooding its beaches and coves, and the island's ecosystem is under threat. Despite the national guards present to manage and control this continuous flow, the island is not as wild as it was until the 1990s.
The island is seriously affected by the tsunami of December 26, 2004 which has unfortunately damaged the coral reefs but also the fauna and flora of the island. "
