Row houses, called locally ‘shotgun’ houses, are a common type of architecture in poorer Southern neighborhoods. The houses are narrow, consisting of rooms lined-up from the front of the house to the back, and usually sit upon blocks. Most of Houston’s shotgun houses lie in suddenly desirable neighborhoods close to downtown. Developers have torn several blocks of these houses down, replacing them with townhouses. This art project is in attempt to save some of the shotgun houses in Houston’s Third Ward neighborhood.

The houses fill the two-block area comprising Project Row Houses. Some of the houses are leased to resident artists; some are used by artists for temporary studios; and others are used as exhibit galleries for temporary installations. A small, permanent collection of artwork by John Biggers is housed in the main building.

The museum doesn’t always have a temporary exhibit. For a few months of the year, all of the space is filled with resident artists. But art still fills the outdoor spaces, decorating the studio windows and doors, hanging on the fences, and painted on the stairs. The blocks surrounding Project Row Houses are also overflowing with art – the Flower Man House, Field of Vision, and Dupree Sculpture Garden.
