The Ajo Federated Church was planned in 1917 and completed in 1926. It was financially supported by John Greenway, the mine owner and one of Roosevelt's Rough Riders. At the time of the church's completion, the rest of the town consisted of tents, shacks and saloons. The church was designed to give the appearance of success and sophistication. The steeple rises from the back left of the church building and soars above the entrance to the adjacent church offices. The bellcote at the top is adorned with a number of classical features and is topped by a wrought iron lightning rod. The bell, caught in the stucco is supplemented by a speaker.
