The public library in the Scottish town of Montrose came about after a merger of the two libraries in the town, the Subscription Library, and the Trades Library. Andrew Carnegie was approached in 1902 and donated £7,500 towards a new building which opened on October 19th 1905.
Designed by Edinburgh architect J Lindsey Grant in a Scots baronial style of red Closeburn sandstone with Westmoreland slates, it is situated on a bend in the road at the southern end of the town's High Street.
The library has recently been extensively modernised inside.
