In 1935, nearly 90% of rural America was without electricity. President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 7037, creating the Rural Electrification Administration (REA).
With the financial assistance of the REA, 99% of rural America is now electrified. 1,000 RECs serve 30,000,000 people nationwide.
At this site in 1935, farmers from Clay and Union Counties held an historic meeting in Burbank, SD. Their purpose was to form a consumer-owned corporation which would allow the rural residents of this portion of SE SD with electricity.
