Der Bebelplatz ist der einzige Platz der Innenstadt, dessen Fassaden so aussehen wie vor 1943. Allerdings befindet sich hinter den wiederaufgebauten Fronten meist eine moderne Konstruktion. Der ehemalige Opernplatz ist auch als Forum Fridericianum bekannt. Friedrich der Große, dessen Reiterstandbild wieder auf dem Mittelstreifen Unter den Linden seinen Platz fand, gab 1740 Order zur Anlage des Platzes.
Bücherverbrennung auf dem Bebelplatz
Auf dem Bebelplatz ließen die Nationalsozialisten am 10. Mai 1933 über 20.000 Bücherverbrennen. Sie waren der Meinung, die von ihnen ausgewählten Bände seien "undeutschen Geistes". Dazu gehörten Bücher von Erich Kästner, der Familie Mann, von Magnus Hirschfeld, Lion Feuchtwanger, Karl Marx, Else Lasker-Schüler und fast 400 weiteren Autoren und Autorinnen. Auch die Bücher Heinrich Heines wurden verbrannt. Hätte man sie stattdessen gelesen, wäre man auf Heines Bemerkung gestoßen, dass man dort, wo man Bücher verbrennt, auch Menschen verbrennen werde.
Mahnmal "Bibliothek" erinnert an Bücherverbrennung
Der Satz steht nun auf Hinweistafeln im Boden, die zum acht Meter tiefen Mahnmal "Bibliothek" in der Platzmitte führen. Dieses unterirdische Mahnmal aus leeren Regalen ist so gestaltet, dass genau 20.000 Bücher hineinpassen würden, gäbe es sie noch. Zugleich erinnert es aus traurigem Grund an eine in Fels gehauene Grabkammer, denn das Heine-Zitat war leider prophetisch. Das durcheine Glasplatte sichtbare Denkmal weist darauf hin, dass die Geschichte unter dem Pflaster und hinter den Mauern verborgen liegt und sich dem erschließt, der sie dort entdecken will und hinschaut."
