Der Französische Dom gehört zu Berlins schönsten Bauten. Trotz seiner Bezeichnung als Dom hatte das Gebäude nie eine kirchliche Funktion, sondern Dom meint hier die architektonische Form mit Turmgebäude und Kuppel (frz. "dôme").
Geschichte des Französischen Doms
Auf dem Gendarmenmarkt wurde zwischen 1701 und 1705 die Französische Friedrichstadtkirche nach den Plänen von Jean Cayart und Abraham Quesnay für die französisch reformierten Glaubensflüchtlinge, den sogenannten Hugenotten, errichtet. Der reformierte Charakter der Kirche wird im Innern durch große Einfachheit wie das Fehlen von Bildern oder Kreuzen unterstützt. Im Jahre 1905 erfolgte eine neobarocke Umgestaltung durch Otto March. Nachdem die Kirche im Zweiten Weltkrieg bis auf die Außenmauern zerstört worden war, erfolgte ein Wiederaufbau ab 1978.
Hübsche Türme ohne Funktion
Zwischen 1780 und 1785 ließ König Friedrich II. zwei fast identische aber funktionslose Türme nach Plänen von Carl von Gontard an die Deutsche und die Französische Kirche anbauen. So entstanden erst 80 Jahre nach dem Bau der Französische Friedrichstadtkirche die Bauten, die heute das Erscheinungsbild des Gendarmenmarktes prägen. Der Friedhof der Hugenottengemeinde musste dem Bau des Französischen Doms weichen, doch bekam diese dafür unentgeltliches Nutzungsrecht des Doms für alle Zeiten.
Französicher Dom als Museum und Aussichtsplattform
Der Dom wurde wie die Französische Friedrichstadtkirche im Zweiten Weltkrieg nahezu zerstört, konnte aber zwischen 1981 und 1987 wieder rekonstruiert werden. Heute befindet sich im Turmbau des Französischen Doms das Hugenottenmuseum, welches die Geschichte und das Leben der französischen Einwanderer zeigt. Ein Highlight ist die Aussichtsplattform, die gegen Eintrittsgeld öffentlich zugänglich ist und einen tollen Panoramablick über Berlin bietet."

History of the French Cathedral

Pretty towers without function

The cemetery of the Huguenot congregation had to give way to the construction of the French Cathedral, but the latter was granted the right to use the Cathedral free of charge for all time.
French Cathedral as Museum and Viewing Platform
Like the French Friedrichstadtkirche, the cathedral was almost destroyed during the Second World War, but was reconstructed between 1981 and 1987. Today, the tower of the French Cathedral houses the Huguenot Museum, which shows the history and life of the French immigrants. A highlight is the viewing platform, which is open to the public for an entrance fee and offers a great panoramic view of Berlin."
