The Fort of San Diego was built by the Spanish by Viceroy Diego Fernández de Córdoba, Marquis of Guadalcázar, and was completed in 1617. Its purpose was to protect the port of Acapulco from attacks by pirates, since Acapulco was an important port on the trade route to Manila, Philippines. It was rebuilt in the 18th century.
In 1776 and earthquake badly damaged the fort and it was demolished and rebuilt from 1778 to 1783 to designs of Ramón Panón. On August 19, 1813, during the Mexican War for Independence, the fort was captured from the Spanish by Mexican forces under José María Morelos. Today it is the home of the Acapulco Historic Museum.
